Holiday Movie Task

John Tucker Must Die

During the holidays, I watched John Tucker Must Die. It was made obvious from the start that the target audience was teenagers.

Synopsis:
Kate (Brittany Snow) is the new girl in school. She catches John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe) dating three different girls at once: Carrie - the smart girl, Heather - the cheerleader, and Beth - the activist slut; none of them are aware that they are not the only girl in John's heart. Kate, having been raised by a single mother, has seen the pain caused by playboys like John Tucker, and she won't stand idly by. Together with the three jilted ex-girlfriends, they hatch a plan to teach John a lesson. Things rarely go as planned, especially when Kate starts to think that she might be falling for John herself.

I noticed that the movie John Tucker Must Die is very similar to the teen film 'Mean Girls.'  The majority of both movies is set:

- At school:

Mean Girls

John Tucker Must Die

- At someones house:

Mean Girls

John Tucker Must Die

- hang out spots/ dating spots
Mean Girls

which is usually the case for teen movies.

Both Mean Girls & John Tucker Must Die (JTMD) had binary opposite characters. There was the three popular girls who were very pretty, glamours, slim & the whole school wanted to be the. They often wore tight-fitted clothing and the latest trends. And then there was the unpopular/weird girl who was shy, weird, or nerdy but always had potential to become one of the popular girls and, surprise surprise, for whatever reason, becomes friends with the popular girls, and eventually turns into one of the popular girls.

Mean Girls

In both movies, there was always some sort of ulterior motive for the girls to become friends and there were themes of revenge in both movies. In JTMD's case, it was because the unpopular girl supposedly knew how to get back at their cheating boyfriend. In Mean Girls' case, the unpopular girl was sent to spy on the three popular girls because of her other friend's hate towards her.

And of course, in both the movies, there was the main boy that the characters wanted, and then there was the other boy, who seemed to get in the way.

Even the trailers for the movies are very similar,

Mean Girls:

Overall, John Tucker Must Die is also like many other teens movies such as She’s All That and The Perfect Man. The movie has sub genres of romance and comedy, which may appeal to other audiences that aren't only teenagers. There is obvious appeal for girls, possibly even some for boys as well because of the element of sport, but mostly for girls. But even the girl audience may be alienated from the movie because of the slightly offensive jokes about made about them.
