Research: creative commons

Creative commons

What is creative commons?
Creative Commons develops, supports, and stewards legal and technical
infrastructure that maximizes digital creativity, sharing, and
innovation. Creative commons allows us to use royalty-free music, meaning
that we can use music that we have been granted permission to and
without there being any copyright infragments.

Why is creative commons useful?
Creative commons is useful because it helps minimise the risk of being charged or having to pay for music belonging to someone else. It's also easy and simply to use, as the video on how to use creative commons shows.

Sites similar to creative commons
Some sites that are similar to/like creative commons that provide royalty free music are:
 http://www.123rf.com/?src=googtrackad12&gclid=CMiE6Y6CpLwCFa-WtAod_1IAzg

This site is called 123rf.com and not only provides royalty free music, but royalty free photos incase we wanted to use a picture of someone and royalty free footage. This site is really useful as it has many royalty free footage and resources that we could incorporate into our opening sequence.

The types of music used in teen film openings

Mean girls
Mean girls is a teen film and has the sub genre of comedy. It also has the sub genre of romance. The opening title sequence for mean girls is:

The song for the opening sequence is called Pass That Dutch by Missy Elliot. Missy Elliot is a fairly well known artist and rapper. It is a hip hop/R'n'B song and is very upbeat and catchy to reflect the tone of the movie. In our opening sequence, however, we would not be able to use this because of copyright reasons. We may use a song similar to this in our opening sequence as one of our sub genre's is comedy.

Final destination
Final destination is a teen horror film. The opening title sequence follows:

The opening song for Final destination is much different to that of Mean Girls. For one, it is much more slow and tense, and doesn't exactly have a specific category of music to go under. It does not have any words on it and is a rather suspenseful piece. This is because the sub genre of Final Destination is horror/thriller, and the opening sequence song reflects the mood of the movie. The artist for the song is unknown, unlike the one for Mean Girls, which has Missy Elliot on it. It would be much easier to use a song like this in our opening sequence as there will not be copyright issues however we would not use something like this in our opening sequence because it doesn't create the effect that we're going for.

Juno
Juno is a teen film that has sub genres of comedy, romance and drama. There trailer:

The opening sequence for Juno is a song by Barry Louis Polisar called All I want is you. The song is quite mellow and has a country-ish feel to it. Using this song may be a problem because of copyright reasons however the song is quite opposite to the tone of the movie as the music is quite soft however the movie tackles hard topics such as teenage pregnancies. We would not want a song like this as our opening sequence song.

Breakfast Club REMAKE!

Typical transport used in teen movies

Typically,in most teen film movies that are set in america show fancy cars and motorbikes in order to emphasise the characters wealth for example a princess who is presented in teen films are mostly presented as spoilt so they arrive to school in fancy cars such as a mercedes benz.Another example are the typical bikers who all the girls like arrive to school in their fancy big motorbikes. This does not happen in all american teen film movies some characters are shown waiting for the bus to sow they haven't got as much money as the other characters.

However,as a group we have decided for all of our characters to arrive to college walking instead of using any other transport .This shows that our characters aren't that wealthy as they are growing up in rural areas of London.

Teen Film Opening: risk assessment, skills audit & institutional detail

Risk assessment
We have many possible locations that we may choose to film at, that involve risks.

- Near a river/lake
- Students run the risk of accidentally falling into the water and possibly drowning.
- The filming equipment may get wet from the water or may fall into the water and break.

- On public transport
- There may be a risk of the equipment falling into the tracks of the train or tube.
- Students may fall into the tracks of the train or tube
- Students may get hit by a bus
- Equipment may fall into the road
- When the transport is moving, the equipment may fall and possibly break
- We may not be able to film on the train/tube because we may not get permission

- On the streets
- Equipment might get stolen
- The weather may damage equipment eg. rain
- If filming during rush hour, other people may not give permission to be filmed or may walk through shots

Institutional detail - Which film company would produce our movie & how it would affect PDE
The film company that would produce our film would be Film4, BBC films, Revolver Entertainment and other smaller production companies because they produced films such as Kidulthood, Adulthood, Anuvahood and teenage TV series' such as Top boy which is what our project is similar to. Also, we don't have the intention to make the film for the big screen or in cinemas or be internationally distributed and would want it to be shown on television. This would affect PDE because it would be low budget and the main appeal would be teenagers in the UK so would not reach different target audiences, such as teenagers in America.

Skills audit to date - What has been learnt about equipment software & blogging skills
What has been learnt about equipment
- How to correctly hold the camera and turn it on.
- How to focus the camera manually, and that autofocus on a camera isn't reliable and should avoid being used as it often loses focus mid shot
- How to put the camera on a tripod
- How to use the camera wheel
- To make sure the microphone is attached and switched on when using sound

Sound in the making of the Breakfast CLub remake

In the video 'The making of the Breakfast Club remake' we have used a song that is played all the way through the video. In order to upload this song we used creative commons. This is a website that allows you to use copy right free music, because copyright is illegal and you can get charged. So creative commons is an interesting and free way for you to use music.
First you have to search for a song that you would like to play, type the name of the song or an artists name into the search bar. For our video we typed in Beyonce.

You have to make sure that you search through SoundCloud, so that you can choose a song from there.

A list of songs will come up on the website, which you then have to choose a song from, that yo want to use.

The song that we chose was summertime by Beyonce.
After you have chosen the song, you have to press the download button, and download the song onto your desktop.

Your song will then be available to use, meaning that you can drag it onto the video and then your DONE!

Props that will be worn throughout our teen film opening

These are just one of the 4 types of headphones that will be used in our teen film opening. We have chosen to make every character wear a pair of headphones as we have chosen to present each characters choice of music that they are listening to this is to allow the audience to understand the different personalities that each character has.
These glasses are going to worn by the character who is playing the criminal.
One of these jumpers are going to be used to represent the jock

These glasses are going to be worn by the geek in order to give viewers a clear idea about the characters personality

Sound and Music

                                                sound and music.

Within our teen film opening we have decided to use a variety of different sounds such as diegetic sounds, non diegetic and also music in order for the viewers to be more aware of our personalities and location.

for example non diegetic sounds:chill will be the dialogue will allow the audience to understand and acknowledge our different accents which will allow viewers to understand where the characters come from.also each characters voices will differ the audience will recognise the different tones of their voices which will give the audience more of an idea of how the characters were raised for example the geek will sound and their dialogue will be formative and intelligant in comparison to the criminal who will speak with slang with an urban attitude.

diagetic:such as loads of cars driving which will covey that the location the characters are in is quite congested which will allow the audience to know they are living and going to college in the city.we are also going to include foley sounds for example our geek character will  fall over on the ground so a foley bang will be included here to emphasise to fall.Another diegetic sound that will be presented within our teen film opening will be pass biers who will be talking in the background.

sound;we will also include music when editing our teen film opening by using creative commons this is to create the atmosphere for each character.we will also use voice overs within our opening this will be to narrate the characters thoughts and feelings.

Uploading a video after editing in Final Cut Pro

After editing the video in Final Cut Pro, in order to upload the video onto our blog I had to compress it.

Firstly I marked the in-point and outpoint of the sequence which is where it begins and ends.

To do this you click 'I' at the beginning and 'O' at the ending.

You then have to export the video as a Quick Time Movie.
To do this you press file, export, Quick Time Movie… as soon below.
This video is now turned into a movie file.

Next you compress the movie in a program called HandBrake, which is located on the dock.

Once HandBrake is opened you then have to upload the movie by clicking the source button on the upper left hand corner.

After you have chosen the movie to compress and have uploaded it, on the sidebar choose blogger, which turns it into a smaller file.

Then press the start button for the video to start compressing.
After the video has finished compressing, it turns from a mov file to m4v file, which you can then upload onto the blog.

Ideas for teen film opening

As we deciding what to do for our teen film opening, I watched a few teen movies of different genres to help decide what our sub genre could be and to find inspiration from these.

First of all, a teen horror film that was I watched was Final Destination.

Mise-en-scene

Location:
 - A lot of it is filmed when they are traveling and arriving, for example, on the plain & in the car.
- At places in the home, eg bathroom and bedrooms
- In the forest (uncommon)
- In the school
- In a church (uncommon)

Costume:
They all wore what typical clothing/clothing that is expected and suited to characters in teen movies. For example, the children were all wearing t-shirts however the adult was wearing a button-up, suggesting that he is older and wiser.

Sound
- Use of parallel sound eg. lots of tense and suspenseful music at vital moments

Camera
- The frequent use of spinning the camera around to show distortion and disorientation
- Extreme close-ups/close-ups commonly used to show facial expressions

Editing
Use of match-cuts

An opposite sub-genre of a teen film I watched was teen comedy. This film was called Angus, Thongs & Perfect Snogging.

Mise-en-scene
Location:

The film is very typical, for a teen movie, in the location its shot in. For example,

- In school
- In people's houses and the majority of it is in the bedroom
- At hang out spots, like a teenagers work place or a party

The movie only deviated from these locations at the end of the movie, when they went to the beach. But even then, that can still be considered as a hang out spot.

Costume
The costume was also very typical. With the popular girl wearing revealing outfits; showing her clevage and being blonde, tall, skinny and pretty. However, the main character, who is considered a bit of a nerd, sticks to baggy tops and jeans, and is short with brown hair. Stereotypes seem to clearly be portrayed in teen comedies rather than teen horrors, where they didn't really make it clear the difference in characters and status etc.

Sound
- Parallel sound, sad music played when the mood of the movie was sad & happy music played when the characters were happy
- Contrapuntal sound, where happy music played when the characters were sad and vice versa
- Voice overs were often used aswell

Camera
The shots were mainly medium close ups

Editing
Use of match cuts but for a completely different reason to the use of match cuts in the teen horrors.

Planning for Teen Film Project

As a group we have had various ideas brainstorming ideas for our teen film project and we have narrowed it down to one main idea which will allow the audience to realise the key conventions of the opening of a teen film.

As a group our idea was generated around four main stereotypical characters who are the Jock, Nerd, The Princess and the Criminal. These characters are using a method called the 'travelling and arriving' sequence. Although all four characters are walking to school, they have different styles, paces, attitudes and physicality which are all distinctive and represent their different stereotypes. For example the 'nerd' will be walking at a fast pace and and constantly checking his time in order to be an hour early to school.

Mise en scene

Mise-en-scene is important in showing the difference in the stereotypes and characters. For example, a nerd would be clear that a character was a nerd if s/he was wearing glasses, had a running nose and was quite petite in size. On the other hand, if a character was wearing all black and was quite big in size, it would be clear that they were some sort of criminal.

Also, lighting is important as, using the examples of the nerd and the criminal, there would be minimal lighting on the nerd to show that he is unimportant and in no position of power however the criminal would have bright lighting on him to show that he is the one to look out for.

In addition, body language & gesture is important in portraying the difference in character. The criminal would be upright and have smug facial expressions, but the nerd would be hunched over and avoiding eye contact.

Sound
In our teen sequence opening, we could use parallel sound for certain characters, such as the criminal, to show that they are important however for other characters, eg, the nerd, contrapuntal sound could be used to show that they are comical and not taken seriously.

Camera
In this teen film we look to have a range of meaningful and key shots in order to establish the teen film, furthermore use camera work in order to portray the characters in certain ways. So for example the 'nerd' would have a high angled shot to show that he is isolated and he is small in society.

Editing
Due to editing in our idea of our teen film, we brainstormed ideas such as :

  • Match cuts
  • Cross cutting
  • im going to add more later

Costumes in 'Breakfast Club'

In the Breakfast club the costume helped to define the different stereotypes in breakfast club. However due to the fact that breakfast club was made in 1985, it is much harder to identify the different stereotypes through the costume in comparison to the present and modern era.

Characters in 'Breakfast Club'

Claire-
  • Burgundy vintage leather jacket
  • Tailored white shirt
  • Matching colored burgundy pouch
  • Diamond pearl earrings
Claire's Father-
  • Burberry Scarf (Expensive designer)
  • Suit & Blazer

It gives us the typical stereotypical that Claire and her dad are very wealthy and rich due to their costumes.

Brian-

  • Basic Beanie hat
  • Brown Fleece
  • XL Backpack

Judging Brian's costume we can assume that Brian is a 'nerd'. The fact that his head is down may signify that he doesn't care about his appearance.

Andre-

  • Big Baseball jacket (blue)
  • Matching blue hoody
  • Logo of teams on baseball jacket

Through Andre's costume we can see that he may be labelled as the stereotypical 'Jock' as he has got 'Swagger'. He is also advertising sports, this shows that he is a Jock.

Breakfast Club script

This is 'the Breakfast Club Script with all the dialogue and the stage directions we will need to include ;

The Blank Screen and Title Card SHATTER to reveal...

1. EXT. SHERMER HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

During Brian's monologue, we see various views of things
inside the school including Bender's locker.

                          BRIAN (VO)
               Saturday...March 24, 1984. Shermer
               High School, Shermer, Illinois.
               60062. Dear Mr. Vernon...we accept
the fact that we had to sacrifice a
               whole Saturday in detention for
whatever it was that we did wrong,
what we did was wrong. But we think
you're crazy to make us write this
essay telling you who we think we
are, what do you care? You see us
as you want to see us...in the
               simplest terms and the most
               convenient definitions. You see us
as a brain, an athelete, a basket
case, a princess and a criminal.
Correct? That's the way we saw each
other at seven o'clock this morning.
               We were brainwashed...
                                                  CUT TO:

2. INT. CLAIRE'S CAR - DAY

We see CLAIRE and her FATHER sitting in their car in the
     parking lot.

Claire is the prom queen and is clearly a snob.

                            CLAIRE
               I can't believe you can't get me
out of this...I mean it's so absurd
I have to be here on a Saturday!
               It's not like I'm a defective or
               anything...

                       CLAIRE'S FATHER
I'll make it up to you...Honey,
               ditching class to go shopping
doesn't make you a defective. Have
               a good day.

Claire rolls her eyes and gets out of the car and walks
     up the school front steps
                                                  CUT TO:

3. INT. BRIAN'S CAR - DAY

We are in BRIAN's car. His MOTHER is there and so is
his little SISTER. He is sort of a nerd.

                        BRIAN'S MOTHER
Is this the first time or the last
               time we do this?

                            BRIAN
                    (upset)
               Last...

                        BRIAN'S MOTHER
Well get in there and use the time
               to your advantage...

                            BRIAN
Mom, we're not supposed to study; we
just have to sit there and do
               nothing.

                        BRIAN'S MOTHER
Well mister you figure out a way to
               study.

                    BRIAN'S LITTLE SISTER
                    (annoyingly)
               Yeah!

                        BRIAN'S MOTHER
               Well go!

Brian gets out of the car and walks towards the school.
                                                  CUT TO:

4. INT. ANDREW'S CAR - DAY

     We see ANDREW and his FATHER.  Andrew is clearly a jock;
he’s wearing a letterman’s jacket with lots of patches on it.

                       ANDREW'S FATHER
               Hey, I screwed around...guys screw
               around, there's nothing wrong with
that. Except you got caught, Sport.

                            ANDREW
Yeah, Mom already reemed me, alright?

                       ANDREW'S FATHER
                    (angry)
You wanna miss a match? You wanna
blow your ride? Now no school's
gonna give a scholarship to a
               discipline case.

Andrew gets out of the car and walks into the school.
                                                  CUT TO:

5. EXT. SHERMER PARKING LOT - DAY

We see JOHN BENDER walking towards us. He is wearing
sunglasses. A car is coming towards him but he doesn't
     stop walking.

The car slams on its breaks directly in front of him.

Bender gets out of the frame. Out of the car steps
ALLISON. She is dressed all in black. She steps
forward to look in the car's front window and the car
     drives away.
                                                 CUT TO:

6. INT. LIBRARY - DAY

There are six tables in two rows of three.
Claire is sitting at the front table. Brian comes in
and sits at the table behind her.

Andrew comes in and points at the chair next to Claire
at the front table. She shrugs and he sits there.

In walks Bender, he touches everything on the checkout
desk and takes a few things in the process.

He walks over to where Brian is sitting and points to
the table on the opposite side of the Library. Brian
     reluctantly gets up and moves.

Bender sits at the table where Brian was and puts his
     feet up.

Allison walks in. She walks all the way around the
library and sits in the back corner table, just behind
     Brian.

Andrew and Claire look at each other and snicker.

Brian looks at her in confusion and then turns away.

Enter RICHARD VERNON, a teacher. He holds a stack
of papers in his left hand. He addresses the group with
such disrespect it makes you wonder how he ever got the
     job.
